My first day of school narrated by inanimate objects

Bathroom mirror: She stumbles into the bathroom early in the morning, squinting against the light and her hair in its usual morning rat’s nest.  Checks the time after a few minutes and begins brushing her teeth with greater speed.

Bedroom mirror: Changes into brandspankingnew school clothes across the room. Comes over and looks at her face for a moment before blending in concealer and face powder. Has some trouble wrapping a pink hijab around her head.

Pink hijab: Yes I was being a little brat and made her almost late. What’s it to ya?

Fridge: Which she opens and closes again, finally pours herself a glass of water, shoves half a boiled egg in her mouth with a disgusted look, and flies out the door.

Car: Yeah her mom’s still driving them to school because she won’t get insurance until October. But you know. That’s fine too.

Sidewalk: Her heart’s kind of fluttering as she walks to the front door because even though she’s been going there her whole life senior year will give you an attack of butterflies.

Backpack: Hi I’m new here. Was a good conversation starter in homeroom.

Door to the counselor’s office: She was chatting with a couple other girls while she waited to get her schedule fixed. Leaned against my frame.

Chair on the far right, front row: The physics teacher is doing a recap of one of the laws: “You’re exerting a force on the chair and the chair is exerting a force on you”. She feels very aware of her derrière.

Lunch bag: So I was unsatisfactory today. She wishes she packed blueberries. And she did not want cheese in her sandwich. Some people are so hard to please gosh.

Stack of loose leaf paper: The teacher had a game in mind for one of her classes, but it required sheets of paper which practically no one had. It was the first day of school, after all. She said, “It’s okay, I got everyone” and I was passed around the classroom. The game commenced.

Locker: Just tossed things in every now and then. Bottom locker, unfortunately.

Car: A bit more smiley on the way back and also very tired. It was a good day. Last first day of school at that place.
